expand Jefferson Airplane

The Airplane formed in San Francisco and debuted at the Matrix on August 13th, 1965.  Original singer, Signe Anderson, who performed vocal chores on their debut album 'Takes Off' left the group and was replaced by Grace Slick from the Bay Area group 'The Great Society'.  With her she brought the song White Rabbit which hit number 8 in the charts and became a million seller.

The group played both the Monterey Pop and Jazz Festivals, among others, most notably Woodstock and Altamont.  The band was under suspicion by the U.S. Government and spied on for having joked about spiking the Washington D.C. water supply with LSD which, of course, our public servants took seriously.  I think it's still a good idea today.
The band had a lengthy career with many great albums, both as a band and their solo endeavors, as well as their offshoot bands, Jefferson Starship, and their less well-known act, Jefferson Shuttle Craft and Hot Tuna.  They played their last show in September 1971 and were inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.  Not bad for a bunch of radical anti-establishment kids.

  • Kurt Page I thunk this is a good album.
  • The Los Angeles Free Press 60's Music Site I love this album. I had the original, folds into a cigar box, cover. Once assembled, when opened, was a picture of weed instead of cigars. I love the old stuff but this and Bark have a special place in my, once tripping, heart. Oh you thunk...............you're on it Kurt, as usual............Thunk is one of my favorite tunes on here!
  • Kurt Page We oldies had the good music!
  • The Los Angeles Free Press 60's Music Site and still do...........the grab bag keeps gettin' bigger!

  • Logan Essex The summer had inhaled and held its breath too long
The winter looked the same, as if it never had gone
And through an open window where no curtain hung
I saw you, I saw you, comin' back to me

One begins to read between the pages of a look
The shape of sleepy music, and suddenly you're hooked
Through the rain upon the trees, that kisses on the run
I saw you, I saw you, comin' back to me

You can't stay and live my way
Scatter my love like leaves in the wind
You always say you won't go away
But I know what it always has been, it always has been

A transparent dream beneath an occasional sigh
Most of the time I just let it go by
Now I wish it hadn't begun
I saw you, yes I saw you, comin' back to me

Strolling the hills overlooking the shore
I realize I've been here before
The shadow in the mist could have been anyone
I saw you, I saw you, comin' back to me

Small things like reasons are put in a jar
Whatever happened to wishes wished on a star?
Was it just something that I made up for fun?
I saw you, I saw you, comin' back to me
  • The Los Angeles Free Press 60's Music Site an extra special note... one guitar is in Paul's hands, the other Jerry Garcia's.
