Dan
Hicks and His Hot Licks was formed in '68, and mostly played second
fiddle - as you can see from the advert on our pages from back then.
But they were good. And by the time their 3rd and last album came out
(1973's Last Train to Hicksville, Hicks made the cover of Rolling Stone!
Then really surprised everyone with his announcement that the band was
bowing out!
The
Oregon Music News just did an interview - and gave some insight into
why the group stopped performing (and we thank them for using a quote
from the LA Free Press!!) Please see the link to their own interesting
interview, given below.

Phillip Lee Morgan this was posted by Bob Henley on my wall... tnx for backing me up buddy. Phil, since there was no comment space on the Dan Hicks link...remember when we went to see Dan Hicks, and you drank his scotch while he was playing? There was nothing he could do about it ;))
Who
let Berkeley in the house? After seeing Berkeley on my resume I am
always surprised to get gigs. Here's a compilation of groups as you can
see by the title here and there is some nice footage. A three-bee. nv

known as "It's A Beautiful Day" or an international hit called "White

we have them all to thank for that.
Dan, the band leader who didn't want to be a band leader, replaced David with jazz violinist Sid Page. Sid made playing worthwhile for Dan over the years as Dan loved the spirited playing and Sid's wild improvisation.
Here, from their debut self-titled album a.k.a. "Original Recordings", is "It's Bad Grammar, Baby". Story of my life and proof of the Peter Principle.

Dan
Hicks was primarily a string bender but his first real foray onto the
music map was with the Charlatans, a folkish sort of pre-psychedelic
sunshine pop outfit. He was the drummer. He wasn't too bad. He
certainly wasn't great. But th
e group
had IT. They had so much of it that they are still IT today. Many
psyche aficionados cite them as signposts along the way.
Here is the long version of "Alabama Bound" from the release "The Amazing Charlatans".

Continuing
along the Dan Hicks route we'll stop at his 2nd album, 1971's great
"Where's the Money?" and we'll dig the title track. Look closely at the
cover photo there and you'll notice Mt. Tam in the background. The
photo was shot on Da
n's houseboat at the
main dock in Sausalito. A few docks down Dan's neighbors were Shel
Silverstein and Alan Watts. That's some heavy action just to go
outside. This original line-up sans David LaFlamme imploded in 1971.

This is presumably a rehearsal for the Flip Wilson Show and there is misplaced laughter and applause here which furthers the rehearsal argument. The actual show is available on YouTube but this is different and funny in places.

Hugh Masekela
Eric Burdon described Hugh Masekela's music as "black as night". It was more than that : Growing up in South Africa, watching the 1950 Kirk Douglas film Young Man With A Horn inspired him to immediately take up the trumpet, and in 1959, he and a group of like-minded musicians formed The Jazz Epistles, the first South African Jazz group to record and play to record-breaking audiences.
In 1960, he left his homeland for the United States in the aftermath of a massacre that claimed the lives of 69 peaceful protesters as the apartheid state became increasingly more brutal. He formed his own band in 1964, and in 1968, had a #1 hit with "Grazing In The Grass". He guest played trumpet on The Byrds' "So You Want To Be A Rock 'n' Roll Star", and in the '80s worked with Paul Simon. Since he started playing professionally in 1954, his music has been a reflection of his life experiences: the agony, conflict, struggles, and sorrows of apartheid, exploitation, slavery, and individual hardships, but also the joys and passions of South Africa's people, and age has not slackened him one bit.
