IT’S ANOTHER ‘LIVE’ LA FREE PRESS EVENT: IT’S BRUCEMAS!!

>Yours truly, The LA FP, first presented BRUCEMAS! in 1968 as ‘The Second Free Press Summer Celebration’ at the Cheetah pier, in Venice. 30,000 people celebrated on the beach below! Our ‘Re-Broadcast’ remembers it all.

>>As a nativity party – a second coming, of sorts - it honored Lenny Bruce, one of the greatest stand-up comedians, social critics and satirists of all time, who passed away about 2 years earlier.
>>>With host Murray Roman, a writer for The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, 9 bands were set to perform: Illinois Speed Press, Chicago Transit Authority, Pacific Gas and Electric, Black Pearl, Sherwood, Fields, Outlaw Blues Band, Sweetwater, and Gypsy Wizard. Rumor had it that Alice Cooper, Kaleidoscope and Dino Valenti were also coming by.

This event actually took place on August 18th, 1968. IF you WERE there, come join our Eye-Witness Appreciation Program. TELL us about what you saw or did and, YOU, too, can BECOME PART OF THIS EVENT(!) ~ we’ll either announce YOUR name FROM THE STAGE or a give you a shoutout IN THE COMMENTS. REALLY.  To be in touch, Just Click HERE.

(fyi.. part of our purpose for doing all of this is to fill in the historical record. So, even if you wish to remain anonymous, your input will be much appreciated!)

Dennis Vogt Cool!

Norvel Martin Lenny Bruce... who worked during a time when it was dangerous to be that funny... his sacrifice for free speech kicked open the doors for Pryor, Carlin... everyone. At a time when "the authorities" were still massively corrupt in L.A. --- Imagine a Ralph Steadman cartoon of a rabid cop dragging Lenny off stage. The old saying "Lenny Bruce died for our sins" is truer today than ever
RIP Lenny

The Los Angeles Free Press 60's Music Site Norvel Martin Dangerous then, indeed... he certainly deserved the celebration in his honor. Hope you've a moment to stop by tomorrow; will be great if you've the chance to 'attend'.

It’s another ‘LIVE’ LA Free Press Event: IT’S BruceMAS!! ‘Re-Broadcasted’ right HERE (!))
Earlier, we posted our advert with top-to-left... hiding the bands, just for fun  We've flipped it around... see who all is coming?

(Then put your 2 cents in the comments, just like all of them!)

Today IS the day!! for another ‘LIVE’ LA Free Press Event: IT’S BRUCEMAS!!

>We first presented this in 1968 as ‘The Second Free Press Summer Celebration’. It was at the Cheetah pier in Venice, with 30,000 of our closest friends on the beach below! This ‘Re-Broadcast’ remembers it all.
>> As it was in honor of Lenny Bruce, one of the greatest stand-up comedians, social critics and satirists of all time, who passed away about 2 years earlier (8/6/66, actually), we somehow thought that a nativity party was appropriate (hence, the ‘Mas’). For sure, Lenny’s own mother was certain that we hadn’t gotten it right… she phoned to say that her son, the prophet, had actually been born on October 13. (ahh, you gotta love moms.) And, hey, it was the 60’s…
>>>>Come on and join us – (!) – for some good music, vibes, and other surprises.

So… Here we are, at yet another LA Free Press ‘LIVE’ Event!
>>>>>>>>>>>>> IT’S BRUCEMAS! <<<<<<<<<<<<
>Overhead, is a bright blue sky… the waves are a rollin’ in… and it seems that just about 1,000 of us have arrived here thus far.
Murray Roman is the ‘Official’ MC… he’ll be on stage, doing the ‘official’... “and, now, here’s….. “.
>>And me? Ever so much more interesting ;) (you did see the wink, right?)… I‘ll actually be telling you a bit about the bands, point out the best they offer and what’s upcoming, toss in some news of the day and, hopefully, have some time to chat with you about it all, as well.
>>>Let me start with a mention of Lenny Bruce… someone whose brilliant wit shone a light onto issues that others, to the disadvantage of most, sought to hide. Lenny’s persistence proved his courage; we applauded him then, and we celebrate him now.
>>>>As many of you have already heard – via the announcements of this Event on Community Radio, KRLA, and KPPC – all of our efforts – theirs, ours – the LA Free Press- , and ALL of the bands playing, are a donation in his honor, and in his memory, and in support of what he held dear. Let’s all hope that his conviction to say what he thought, in the terms in which he wished to express himself, is, someday soon, over-turned. And that he is no longer banned – wherever he has gone - but, instead, is, as he would be here, warmly welcomed. Forever and ever.
Ok… so… who’s come to play?
